[1] C. *Title:Molecular Electronic Topology and the Regulation of Electro-magnetic Properties |

*Abstract: Topologically nontrivial molecular nanocarbons, featuring twisted, non‑planar architectures, exhibit fundamentally altered π‑electron delocalization, aromaticity, and magnetic behaviors, positioning them at the forefront of synthetic chemistry and topological materials science. For decades, many of these theoretical constructs have remained inaccessible, representing “holy grails” in synthetic organic chemistry. Here we present a series of strategic breakthroughs that collectively address this challenge. First, we developed an exo‑molecular stitching strategy, which employs precisely controlled peripheral annulations to construct multiply twisted molecular nanocarbons. Second, leveraging an intramolecular fold‑in stitching approach, we achieved the long‑awaited precise syntheses of quintulene and Möbius kekulene, overcoming the extreme strain and geometric constraints that had previously thwarted all attempts. Our work not only provides efficient synthetic strategies towards topologically nontrivial molecular nanocarbons but also elucidates how molecular topology governs their electronic structure and magnetic properties, thereby establishing a solid foundation for exploring topology‑driven quantum phenomena in carbon‑based architectures. |
*Profile: Dr. Yong Ni is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He received his B.Sc. degree from Zhejiang University in 2010 and his Ph.D. degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2015. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and the NUS. He joined SUSTech in late 2022 as an Associate Professor. His research focuses on π-conjugated molecules with nontrivial topologies, encompassing their precise synthesis, systematic studies of topological electronic states, and the mechanic manipulation of optical, electronic, and magnetic features.
